  • Normal Site

University halls at Bangor are predominantly for first years and are not available for students in higher years. However, if a student is disabled or there are any places left students may be able to stay in the universities own accommodation after their first year. Generally though once students complete their first year they move into private housing, and there is plenty to choose from in Bangor.

Lower Bangor

Situated in Lower Bangor is the City Centre. The City Centre of Bangor accommodates the longest high street in Wales, containing some of the big name shops as well as it’s own independent retailers. It also includes a modern shopping centre, giving the students of Bangor modern facilities while maintaining an historic atmosphere. At the time of writing (August 2007) a new shopping centre and multi-storey car park is currently being built on the site of the current Wellfield Shopping Centre.

Also in Lower Bangor are many of the Universities buildings and some halls of residence. As well as the private halls of residence called Neuadd Willis.

While in the City Centre of Lower Bangor a quick glance up and you will able to view the Main Arts building of Bangor University. This is situated in Upper Bangor just short a 5-10 minute walk away.

Upper Bangor

Known locally as the Student Village, Upper Bangor has a variety of smaller shops. These include a hairdressers, chemist, launderette, newsagents and pubs. The student village has developed over the years as students predominantly use this area of Bangor. It sits conveniently in between the largest halls of residence, Ffriddoedd Site, and college road where the Main Arts building is located.

Food Shopping

Bangor has a large selection of supermarkets in both upper and lower Bangor. These include Morrison in the Student Village, Iceland and Lidl in Lower Bangor. Also along Caernarfon Road there is a 24 hour Tesco Extra and a Kwik Save. Students who prefer to support local businesses can also visit a butcher shop, bakeries and a health shop.

Retail Park

A few minutes outside the City Centre on Caernarfon Road you’ll find the St David’s Retail Park with Matalan, PC World and JJB Sports. Also on that road there’s a host of DIY and Furniture shops, Argos Extra and Next.

Nightlife

The Students Union boasts its very own £1million Amser/Time nightclub, which is considered the best club throughout North Wales. Top performers visit there regularly such as The Ordinary Boys, Idlewild, Lemar and Girls Aloud who have appeared at Bangor recently.

Sport

As well as your traditional sports Bangor is a great place if you are interested or wish to get involved in outdoor pursuits. You will be spoilt for choice by the full range of opportunities available on the University's doorstep. From rock climbing to scrambling and hill walking to abundance’s of water sports including canoeing, kayaking, surfing, sailing and sea kayaking.
